Thanks to Youtuber schreineinAV for sharing the original MP3s, and credits go to him for providing a lot of this information! :D
"Stranded With Gifts"
Live at the Dublin Electronic Arts Festival - City Hall, Dublin, Ireland
October 23, 2004
This was Coil's last live show. According to John Balance on the old Coil mailing list and an advert for the gig, the gig was billed as a 5-piece improvisational set with prepared vocals titled "Stranded With Gifts." "A White Rainbow" was meant to serve as a healing ritual dedicated to Marc Almond, who some weeks prior was involved in a near fatal motorcycle accident in London (if fact, I think at the previous gig, John makes mention of it at some point).
These are snippets of a very rare audience recording of Coil's last show (plus some rare pictures and an extremely brief video clip from a separate but equally rare source). Sourced from the original MP3 files which were first shared in the Soulseek group "The Solar Lodge" by a now unknown user. Up until now, the only public place you could hear these files was on Youtube. The poster only uploaded three songs, with a promise to later post "A White Rainbow" and "Going Up," though they never followed up on it.
Back when these files were first shared, the actual names of a lot of the songs, or even the common bootleg ones you see today, were not well known. Some people thought "Going Up" was "Rosa Decidua" from the Autumn Equinox EP while very few people recognized "Going Up" as a cover of the Are You Being Served? theme song. The tracklist was thought to be this:
A White Rainbow
I'm Happy I'm Dead
The Queen Watches a Scale Model of the Universe Descend Over Slough
The Golden Age of Bloodsports
Are You Ready to Go Now?/Going Up
It's not clear how many songs you can necessarily say were performed, either; most of them transition so smoothly into one another as to be just one song. A picture of the tracklist as seen onstage was known to have existed, but I cannot locate it. Peter might not have known the "actual/official" song titles when he made Colour Sound Oblivion, resulting in the names you see today. Here's my version of the track list of this particular gig:
White Rainbow (Missing)
The Beginning is Always the End (Missing)
1. Unhappy Rabbits
2. Stranded With Gifts
3. Tom's Radio Weston (Cuts Out)
Going Up (Prelude) (Missing)
Going Up (Missing)
Cliff Stapleton – hurdy-gurdy
Francois Testory – countertenor on “Going Up”
The only other audio from this gig is from three camera mics. The whole gig is patched together using the three semi-pro cameras and camera mic audio on Colour Sound Oblivion DVD #14, though it's not clear which parts are from which camera.
IF YOU HAVE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION ON THIS AUDIENCE RECORDING, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!
